I remember my mother telling me about how they had "moon parties" when this happened. It may not seem like such a huge thing today but it was a very big deal back in 1969 (when I was a baby).
I was fascinated by this as a kid. My dad wanted to be an astronaut so he taught me to want to be one too. I think explosion of the Challenger changed my view.
